ARTIST STATEMENT

Emma Jordan (She/They)

is an interdisciplinary abstract artist currently based between  Mi’kma’ki (NS), Canada, and London, England.

My work focusses on the human experience of growth in the presence of  trauma, and how studio practices not only give space to produce contemporary work, but provides an alternative form of coping. In my work, I aim to identify how obsession and repetition, as well as notions of decay and growth, all consciously and subconsciously present themselves, through material experimentation and manipulation. Somatic intervention and movement of the body play a fundamental role to the creation and reflection of my work.

My practice recognizes the non-linear function to growth, and yields from processing discomfort, resilience and adaptability, additionally, identifying themes of escapism, rage, and self-destruction. I have begun to unwrap my own inner conflicts  with mortality, empowerment and taking up space.

Scale is an important factor to my work, leading to the ultimate goal of my practice as installation, where what I produce can heavily engage with a space, and create an opportunity within the gallery to challenge visceral and abstracted emotions individual to each viewer.

Jordan has had the privilege of achieving a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, Majoring in Interdisciplinary Arts, at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University (NSCAD) in 2021. She also acknowledges a great amount of time and impact studying with Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland, during her foundational studio work and study of art history while abroad (2015/7). Currently, she is a Post-Graduate Candidate in the Camberwell College of Arts UAL, MA Fine Art: Drawing programme (2023/4).
