Emma Jordan
ARTIST STATEMENT
Emma Jordan (She/They)
is an interdisciplinary abstract artist currently based between Mi’kma’ki (NS), Canada, and London, England.
My work focusses on the human experience of growth in the presence of trauma, and how studio practices not only give space to produce contemporary work, but provides an alternative form of coping. In my work, I aim to identify how obsession and repetition, as well as notions of decay and growth, all consciously and subconsciously present themselves, through material experimentation and manipulation. My work recognizes the non-linear function to growth, and yields from processing discomfort, isolation, empowerment, resilience and adaptability. I aim to integrate intuitive marking and impulsive action with a range of processes such as charcoal gestural drawing, paint dripping, paper ripping, scoring and cutting, the occasional use of blindfolded compositions, and light.
Scale is an important factor to my work, leading to the ultimate goal of my practice of installation, where what I produce can immerse and interact with the viewer, and create a space within the gallery setting to sit with and empathize with the emotions and experiences of one another, wherever they stem from personally.
Including Moving image, and intentional interactive light as a medium is the next step for my work.
Jordan has had the privilege of achieving a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, Majoring in Interdisciplinary Arts, at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University (NSCAD) in 2021. She also acknowledges a great amount of time and impact studying with Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland, during her foundational studio work and study of art history while abroad (2015-17). Currently, she is a Post-Graduate Candidate in the Camberwell College of Arts UAL, MA Fine Art: Drawing programme (2023).
